Fr. James McNamee and Fr. James Rooney, assistants at Holy Family in 1925, found they had a common concern for the African American community segregated on Tulsa's north side. They began to visit the impoverished neighborhoods, where people were still trying to rebuild their homes after the devastation of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre.
From their contacts, they learned that the most pressing need was for a school. Soon they were laying the groundwork for one. At first, the project was dedicated to St. Pius V, but a few months later it became St. Monica's, inaugurating a period of spectacular growth, with an average of a hundred converts a year over the next 10 years.
In 1935, fire destroyed the old Brady Hotel. Fr. Daniel Bradley purchased all the materials he could salvage, and used them to build a new church at 633 Marshall Place. Bishop Francis Kelley dedicated this structure on September 27, 1937.
Since 2017. Fr. Celestine Obidiegwu has been pastor of St. Monica and St. Augustine.
